·         Recordar y reconocer las 6 regiones naturales de nuestro país junto con sus características principales y sus diferencias.

·         Apreciar el incalculable valor de nuestro país mediante el reconocimiento de cada una de las regiones naturales de Colombia.

·         Utilizar el video como evidencia de las habilidades orales de nuestros estudiantes en la lengua extranjera.

       Natural regions of Colombia

 





 

 

Colombia is divided by six natural regions:  They are:

.  Andean region

.  Caribbean  region

.  Pacific region

.  Orionquia region

.  Amazonia region

.  San Andres and Santa Catalina (insular) region

 

 

ANDEAN REGION


 


The Andean region is the most population region of Colombia.  It’s called like this because of the Andes mountains, which is the most important system of mountains in South America from Patagonia to our country.  They are divided in three branches knowns as “cordilleras”.  They are: west, central and east one. 

The climate and vegetation of the region vary considerably according to the altitude from warm weather to cold land and paramos. From 1.000 meters to 4.600 mts and above.

In this region are located some of the most important cities of the country.  It’s located Bogota, the capital of Colombia.  It’s the most population city in this country.  There are also: Medellin, Cali, Pereira, Armenia, Manizales, Cucuta and  Bucaramanga.

Food:  The typical food is based on autochthonal products like corn, potatoes, yuca, bananos, rice and of course, coffee that is recognized in all the world.

Folclore:  folclore is very variated from bambucos, pasillos, chirimias, and also Cali is very known as the capital of Salsa.

Touristic places:  Colombia has a high variety of weather because of the termic floors of their mountains.

Bogota:  Monserrate,

Santander:  Chicamocha park

Eje cafetero:  (Quindio- Risaralda)  National park of Coffee

Antioquia:  paisa town, Guatape

Manizales: National park of Snowy

 

 

 

 

 

CARIBBEAN REGION:


 


The Caribbean region covers 132.218 km2 adjacent to the Caribbean Sea, stretching from the Gulf of Uraba in the west to the Guajira Peninsula in the east and including some or all of the departments of Guajira, Bolivar, Atlántico, Cesar, Magdalena, Sucre and Cordoba. It’s also characterized by a tropical weather.  The most of its territory is about 30 centigrade degrees.  Is the most dry region of Colombia because it has between 500 mm to 2000mm of rain a year.

The region is traversed by a number of rivers heading from the Andean highlands to the sea, including Colombia's principal river, the Magdalena River, which disgorges at the main port of Barranquilla.  As the area first settled by Europeans, the Caribbean region is also the location of the historic port cities of Santa Marta and Cartagena. 

 

Typical food: seafood, sancocho, rice with coconut, suero costeño, carimañolas and butifarra.

Folclore:   Cumbia, vallenato, porros

Touristic places: 

Guajira:  Cape of la vela.  Desertic zones

Cartagena:  Castillo San Felipe

Santa Marta:  Rodadero beaches.  Sierra Nevada. (The highest mountain of Colombia near the beach).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

PACIFIC REGION



The Pacific Region is located on Colombia's western, Pacific coast, and covers an area of 83,170 km2 (32,110 sq mi). It extends from the Gulf of Urabá in the north to the border with Ecuador in the south, and includes part of the departments of Nariño, Cauca and Valle del Cauca, and the whole of Choco Department.

This region is distinguished by its high humidity.  Precipitation is among the highest in the world, with an average of 4.000 mm per year.  These high levels of precipitation support a number of rivers, including the Atrato River, San Juan River, Patia River, Baudo River and Mira River.  The population of the region is mainly afrocolombian and the economy is vased on mining (gold and platinum), timber, fishing, cattle raising and agriculture (borojo, banana and plantain).

Buenaventura is the colombian most important port at the pacific coast.

It’s common to see a great variety of marine animals like: sharks, crabs, sperm, shrimps and whales, specially humpbacked whales “ballenas jorobadas” that conform a wonder spectacle every year because they go to desobar at their coasts after they traveled from the south of the continent.  It also has a special fauna:  ant bear, wild boar, marmoset, sloth, freshwater caiman, harpy eagle, as well as amphibians and reptiles.

This region has 8 national parks to take care of biodiversity (one of the most important in the world).

Typical food:  Atollado rice, bocacchico fish with coconut juice, Bagre fish dish, Chautiza

Folclore:  Currulao, tamborito, aguabajo, abozao, chirimia

Touristic places:  Solano Bay, Calima lake, Buga, Cali, juanchito, popayan churches, las lajas santuary

 

 

ORINOQUIA REGION

 


It’s part of the West planes (llanos orientales) crossed by the Orinoco river along the border with Venezuela country,  It’s composed by the departments of Meta, Arauca, Casanare and Vichada.  This region is rich in oil and suitable for extensive ranching but sparsely populated.  It’s also characterized by the gallery forest that develop along them.   It has a dry and hot weather. The vegetation of savanna and natural pastures predominates where there are plant species such as the yellow guayacan, the ceibas, the epiphytes, the grasses or the morich palms.  There is also a very varied fauna in which species as the red corocora, the black guio, the boa constrictor, the Orinoco caiman, the deer, the macaws , the tiger, the cotudo monkey, the anaconda, among others.

 

Typical food:  Baby beef, “mamona”, sancocho, chiguiro, Cachama fish, llanero rice.

 

Folclore:  Joropo and pasaje.  Typical instruments:  Harp, cuatro and capachos (a kind of maracas)

 

Touristic places:  Natural national parks like:  Cordillera de los picachos, Chingaza, Sierra de la Macarena, El Tuparro, Tinigua and Sumapaz.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

AMAZONIA REGION



 

The Amazon Region is a zone located at the south of Colombia over the Amazon river.  It’s composed by the departments of Caqueta, Guainia, Guaviare, Putumayo, Vaupes and Amazonas.

The region of the Amazon in Colombia has abundant equatorial rains and a warm climate with a temperature that varies between 22 centigrade degrees and 28ªC, which allows the development of the tropical forest and the existence of a fauna enriched with a large number of mammals and amphibians, in which the diversity of endemic reptile and bird species stands out.  In this region we can find species such as macaws, toucans, jaguars, alligators and many more.

It also has an importante presence of indigena tribus like the Yuri and the Nukak.  They have been people that live in Amazons before Cristopher Columbus arrived our lands in 1492.

Typical food:  Patarasca fish, piraña fish, casabe, pirarucu, ajicero, copoazu soup and tucupi

Folclore: Carimbo, samba, lambada, forro, mixtures and fusions.

Touristic places:  national natural park of Cahuinari, Amacayacu, Yaguas and national park of Rio Pure.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

INSULAR REGION



This region is compund by the both atlantic and pacific oceans.  It’s considered by some as a sixth region, comprising those areas outside continental Colombia, including the department of San Andres and Providencia in the caribbean sea and the islands of Malpelo and Gorgona in the Pacific Ocean.  However, cultural ties are with the respective coastlines.

Typical food:  Rund down, Crabs backs, guised chicken with dumplings, crab soup, beans with pig tail, meatloafs, snail soup

Folclore:  mazurca, mento, quadrile, calipso, schottische and polka.

Touristic places:  Malpelo and Gorgona islands, Blow hole, Morgan cave, the Aquarium, national natural park of old Providence, Mc Bean lagoon,

Tu desafio es hacer un video de 2 a 3 minutos sobre una de las regiones de Colombia, con la informacion aportada en la guia, caracterizandose como una persona de la region y haciendo una  escenografia con los platos tipicos o interpretando una danza tipica de la region..  en ingles, por supuesto.

What is your challenge?
